Sink or Swim is the third book in the Whatever After series, written by Sarah Mlynowski. It was published on April 1, 2014.

Synopsis[]

Once again, my brother and I are in hot water...

We weren’t planning to mess up the fairy tales. The first two times, we did it by accident. But when our magic mirror pulls us into the story of the Little Mermaid we have no choice but to try and rewrite it. Let’s just say the original story does NOT have a happy ending!

Now we need to:

  • Convince our mermaid to keep her tail
  • Plan a royal wedding
  • Avoid getting eaten by sharks

We've got to find a happy ending for the little mermaid . . . before she’s fish food and we’re lost at sea forever!

Storyline[]

After Abby and her mother's trip to visit Nana in Chicago is cancelled, she and Jonah go through the mirror to the story of The Little Mermaid and block the mermaid princes Lana from dragging prince Mortimer of the Kingdom of Mustard to shore. The siblings lure Lana back by holding a portrait of prince Mortimer near the water. They warn Lana that her story does not end happily, but Lana ignores their advice and trades her voice for legs with the sea witch Nelly. At the wedding, Lana finally realizes Mortimer is a jerk and she runs off. Mortimer marries the closest female instead, meaning Lana has until sunrise to fix her curse. Abby and Jonah swallow a potion made of mermaid spit that lets them breathe underwater and negotiate a deal between the sea king, Nelly, and Lana. Lana gets her voice back and avoids dying, but keeps her legs and becomes a writer. Nelly lets Abby and Jonah use her cauldron to return home.

Praise for Sink or Swim[2][]

"Once again, Mlynowski's reimagined fairy tale is oodles of fun, from the fact that everything in the Kingdom of Mustard is yellow to the awesome underwater breathing potion made from mermaid spit. Fresh, hip, and totally entertaining." —Booklist
