Maryrose is the fairy that lives inside Abby and Jonah's basement mirror. Jax is Maryrose's cousin.

Appearance[]

Maryrose appeared within the mirror in the eighth book, and appears in Abby’s jewelry box in the fourteenth book. She has wavy dark brown hair, a long, smooth face, and violet eyes. She wears a shimmering silver dress, leggings, and shoes. She's slightly taller than Abby, but can shrink herself to fit inside Abby's jewelry box. When she gets tired or weak, her body becomes watery and flickers in and out of focus.

Personality[]

Maryrose is kind and understanding; she can be very mysterious as well, never revealing too much of her plans to Abby and Jonah. She acts on her own accord and is introverted. She is also quite shy.

Biography[]

Maryrose has the ability to transport people into fairy tales, but only at midnight. Maryrose rarely speaks, but in each book, more information is found out about her and who she is. She grew up in Wallenta when she was little. She is cursed to live inside The Magic Mirror. By information in the books, she was probably cursed by the evil fairy Gluck, Jax and other fairies. In Abby in Oz, Maryrose mentions that she knew Glinda (the good witch from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) a long time ago before she was trapped. She also knew Lottie and maybe Carlotta from Sleeping Beauty and Gabrielle from Snow White.

Etomology[]

The name Maryrose is likely based on Maryrose Wood, an author. The name Maryrose is made of two words: "Mary" and "Rose". Mary is derived from "Miriam", which means "beloved", or "bitter" and "rebellious". The rose is a flower, which means, as a name "famous type". The name Maryrose itself means "rebellion" or "well-wished for child". The most probable meaning is "sea of bitterness and sorrow". It may also mean "mistress/lady of the sea".
